Deviation Handling: Managing Unexpected Incidents and Errors

Learn what deviation handling is, how to implement it, and how Runwell turns deviations into constructive feedback and tasks.
What is deviation handling?
It’s the systematic process organisations use to detect, manage and resolve unexpected incidents, errors or non‑conformities, whether they involve production faults, quality issues, safety breaches or legal violations.
How is it done?
The process has five steps:
- Identification: Discover the deviation via inspections, monitoring or reports from staff or customers.
- Registration and documentation: Record what happened, where and when.
- Analysis: Understand the root cause (weak processes, technical faults or human error).
- Corrective actions: Change procedures, train staff or adjust routines to prevent recurrence.
- Follow‑up: Monitor the situation to confirm the problem is solved and the measures are effective.
Deviation handling maintains quality and safety while providing a basis for learning and improvement. Runwell has renamed “deviations” to feedback, making it a natural part of daily operations. Feedback can be an idea to improve the business or a broken tile in the kitchen. The system allows anonymous reporting; all feedback is stored in a dedicated centre where management can update statuses, assess risks and convert items into tasks with responsible owners.
Runwell offers a smart, user‑friendly system tailored to various industries, including hospitality.
